  • Friends are God's way of apologizing for the family

I don't necessarily agree with this quote, but I saw it and thought someone might smile.
I'm taking an online health course for credentialing and another course for this first summer term. It's kind of an intense time for me. To top it off, I'm taking my kids on a field trip in less than a week and I am less than prepared.
Also, looking for a place to live. We've given Los Angeles proper a chance. Time to move on.
So I'll be in Seattle from June 26 - July 9th. Now accepting appointments.
Finally, I will no longer be teaching English/Social Studies next year. My position has changed to Math/Sciences--what I wanted when I first started! This is an exciting yet difficult change. I look forward to it.

    Spinal/Health

Two things I am really digging: SparkPeople and my chiropractor.

    SparkPeople
It's not a diet, but it's a way of keeping track of your nutrition and fitness habits. I don't think I'd do this on my own-- I'm doing this with a friend-- but I think it's a great way to keep track without going crazy with the calorie calculator. It feels so good to see how many calories I just burned from my 35 minute brisk walk, or see what I'm eating by numbers. I've been noticing I eat a whole lotta carbs and not enough protein. Surprise, surprise. But it's really keeping me in check. Now, it's only been a week. Let's see how long I can hold out. People get really into it-- it's like a MySpace for people trying to get healthy. I'm kind of addicted. But it's only day 7.
It's also been tempting to "cheat" and omit certain items I consume, but as I tell my students, "You're only cheating yourself." Ain't that the truth.

    Chiropractor
I love this guy! I found him at this free 10-minute massage thing at one of the choice Bally's in our area. Roommate and I got our free massages (I was convinced the man was in love with me, what with the way he was caressing my back and all.... Oh. That's his job). We found out that it was really a plug for some chiropractor. He was offering a $20.00 consultation, which normally costs $150.00+. Guess who really likes deals? ME! Okay, okay... you say it's not a deal because I'll end up spending hundreds--no--thousands on some "quack" of a chiropractor. I have to admit, I'm pretty new age-y for a Christian girl. I believe in all this spinal cord health stuff.
But why do I love my chiropractor? Not only is he on a mission to educate everyone about the health of their spine, but he has excellent bedside manner (does this term apply to chiropractors as well?). He genuinely cares about the whole care of each of his patients. Also, they own a family business. I get to chat with his wife, Shelley, every time I come in. I really miss the whole family vibe and soak it in whenever possible.
Here's the best part: miraculously, my visits to the chiropractor are covered by insurance. How awesome is that?
And want to know the very last reason I love my chiropractor? He just sent me a coupon for a free adjustment for my birthday. Woohoo!

P.S. I'm 22, people. That automatically makes you "into" your twenties.

  • Los Angeles

A list of pros and cons of living in L.A.-- an attempt to evaluate whether or not I should stay after my two-year contract. Suggestions are welcome.

    Pros
    • K-Town (accessible, nummy food)
    • Pinkberry! (Coming to a city near you)
    • Nice beach access
    • Linguistic diversity
    • Pockets of people groups that are unique and distinct from others
    • My school and kids
    • Special people
    • Synergy Cafe
    • West Subs
    Cons
    • Far from family, friends, social networks
    • Sprawled and screwy city planning which makes a drive to any location in the city at least 45 - 90 minutes long
    • Rude people
    • No rain
    • Pockets of people groups that are often isolated from the "outside"
    • Intensified Black/Brown/Yellow tensions. I'm yellow. Think about it. (Maybe this should be a pro? In other parts of the country this issue may be ignored or under-addressed.)
    • Real Earthquake country
    • Far from family
    • Far from friends
    • Income tax
    • Everyone claims to be in the entertainment industry. This gets really annoying.
    • Moms are cooler and hotter than me
    • I actually have an urge to get a pedicure while living here. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!
    • Smoking is allowed outside, near the doors of public establishments and has a tendency to waft into the restaurant/cafe
